FINAL-MUMBAI ROCKETS VS BENGALURU RAPTORS

Final of Premier Badminton League 4, held on Jan 13 ,saw the Mumbai Rockets play against Bengaluru Raptors .

Bengaluru Raptors edged out Mumbai Rockets by 4-3 at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru to clinch their maiden PBL title. The pair of Hendra and Ahsan helped Bengaluru to claim the title after they won the decider match in straight games.

MATCH 1 – Mixed Doubles

The first match of the Tie was between P. Zebadiah and K.G.Jung of Mumbai Rockets and Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith of Bengaluru Raptors in the Mixed Doubles Category. It was a trump match for Mumbai rockets. In the first game, Mumbai picked up the first point with Kim’s smash down the line before they raced to a 3-1 lead with Pia’s Deceptive Cross-court drop shot. However, Raptors leveled the scores at five points each after Kim’s return caught the net. Mumbai took an 8-5 lead at the break after Marcus shot went wide. After the break, Raptors reduced the deficit to two points with a good stab from Lauren for Pia’s serve. However, Mumbai extended their lead to 13-8 with Kim’s jump smash from the baseline. Finally, Mumbai won the first game by 15-8 after Marcus shot went wide.

In the second game, Mumbai won the first point, after Marcus unforced error before Raptors took a 2- 1 lead with Marcus jump smash. Raptors increased their lead to 6-3 after Pia’s shot hit the net before Mumbai reduced the deficit to one point with Pia’s smash. Raptors took a 2-point lead at the break with Marcus forehand winner. After the break Raptors took an 11-9, lead after Pia’s drop shot caught the net. However, Mumbai leveled the scores at 12 points each after Marcus shot went wide. Finally, Mumbai won their trump match in straight games by 15-14 on courtesy of errors from Lauren and Marcus that gave Mumbai Rockets a 2-0 lead in the Tie.

MATCH 2- Men’s Singles

The second match of the Tie was between A. Antonsen of Mumbai Rockets and S. Kidambi of Bengaluru Raptors in the Men’s Singles Category. In the first game, Srikanth won the first point with a cross-court jump smash before he raced to a quick 4-0 lead after Antonsen smash went wide. Srikanth further extended his lead to 7-3 with a smash before he took a comfortable 4-point lead at the break with a forehand smash. After the break, Srikanth extended his lead to 11-5 after Antonsen shot went long. Srikanth further extended his lead to 14-7 with a smash. Srikanth took the first game comfortably by 15-7 after Antonsen shot went wide.

In the second game, Antonsen took the first point after Srikanth’s shot caught the net before he took a 3-2 lead after Srikanth’s smash landed inside his own half. However, Srikanth took a 4-3 lead with a drop shot and extended his lead to 7-6 with a beautiful cross-court backhand before he took a 2-point lead at the break. After the break, Srikanth extended his lead to 11-7 with a superb smash. However, Antonsen reduced the deficit to two points after Srikanth’s return caught the net. Srikanth extended his lead to 14-10 after Antonsen return went wide. Finally, Srikanth won the match in straight games by 15-10 after Antonsen shot went long that helped Raptors to reduce the deficit to one point in the Tie.

MATCH 3- Women’s Singles

The third match of the Tie was between S.Pardeshi of Mumbai Rockets and T.T.Vu of Bengaluru Raptors in the Women’s Singles Category. It was a trump match for Bengaluru Raptors. In the first game, Pardeshi won the first point after Trang’s smash went wide before she took a 2-1 lead with Trang’s backhand-unforced error. However, Trang leveled the scores at three points each with a well-disguised drop shot. Pardeshi took a 6-3 lead after Trang’s backhand error, but Trang leveled the scores at six points each after Pardeshi’s forehand-unforced error. Trang took a 2-point lead at the break after Pardeshi’s forehand shot went wide. After the break, Trang took an 11-6, lead with a forehand smash. Trang further extended her lead to 13-7 with a forehand drop shot. Finally, Trang won the first game by 15-8 with a forehand winner.

In the second game, Pardeshi won the first point after she got the better of Trang in a 20-shot rally with a forehand winner before she took a 3-0 lead with a backhand winner. However, Trang leveled the scores at three points each with a forehand winner. Pardeshi leveled the scores at five points each after Trang’s forehand shot went wide. Trang took a 7-5 lead after Pardeshi’s forehand shot went long, but Pardeshi leveled the scores at seven points each with Trang’s backhand error. Trang took a 1-point lead at the break after Pardeshi’s forehand shot went wide. After the break, Trang extended her lead to 14-9 with a forehand winner. Finally, Trang won her trump match in straight games by 15-9 with a backhand cross-court winner that gave Raptors a 3-2 lead in the tie.

MATCH 4- Men’s Singles

The fourth match of the Tie was between S. Verma of Mumbai Rockets and S. Praneeth of Bengaluru Raptors in the Men’s Singles Category. In the first game, Praneeth won the first point with a forehand winner before he raced to a 4-1 lead with a backhand winner. Praneeth extended his lead to 7-1 after Sameer’s forehand cross-court winner caught the net. Praneeth took a hefty 7-point lead at the break with a forehand cross-court winner. After the break, Praneeth extended his lead to 11-3 with a backhand winner. Praneeth extended his lead to 14-7 after Sameer’s smash caught the net. Finally, Praneeth won the first game by 15-7 with a body smash.

In the second game, Sameer won the first point with a forehand drop shot before he took a 5-2 lead with Praneeth’s backhand-unforced error. Praneeth reduced the deficit to two points after Verma’s forehand shot went wide before he leveled the scores at seven points each with a forehand winner. Praneeth took a 1-point lead at the break with Sameer’s forehand-unforced error. After the break Sameer leveled, the scores at 11 points each after Praneeth’s forehand shot went long. Sameer extended his lead to 13-11 after Praneeth’s forehand shot went wide. Finally, Sameer forced the game into the decider by 15-12 with a jump smash.

In the third game, Praneeth won the first point with Sameer’s forehand-unforced error. Sameer took a 5-2 lead with a cross-court winner before he extended his lead to 6-3 with a forehand winner. Sameer took a comfortable 5-point lead at the break. After the break, Sameer extended his lead to 13-3 after Praneeth’s smash caught the net. Finally, Sameer won the match by 15-3 with a forehand winner that helped Raptors to level the scores at three points each in the Tie.

MATCH 5- Men’s Doubles

The fifth match of the Tie was between K.G.Jung and L.Y.Dae of Mumbai Rockets and M. Ahsan and H.Setiawan of Bengaluru Raptors in the Mixed Doubles Category. In the first game, Raptors won the first point with Ahsan forehand winner down the line. However, Mumbai took a 4-3 lead with Lee’s Ace. Raptors took a 2-point lead at the break. After the break, Raptors extended their lead to 10-8 with Hendra’s forehand cross-court winner. However, Mumbai reduced the deficit to two points with Hendra’s forehand-unforced error. Raptors extended their lead to 14-11 with a forehand winner before they won the first game by 15-13.

In the second game, Raptors won, the first point of the game before Mumbai leveled the scores at three points each with Ahsan’s unforced-forehand error. Raptors took a 6-3 lead with Ahsan’s forehand winner down the line before he took a comfortable 5-point lead at the break. After the break, Raptors extended their lead to 11-8 with Hendra’s forehand winner. Raptors extended their lead to 14-10 with Hendra’s forehand winner. Finally, Raptors won the match in straight games by 15-10 with Kim’s forehand-unforced error that gave Raptors their Maiden PBL title after a thrilling encounter.
