TIE 27-BENGALURU RAPTORS VS CHENNAI SMASHERS

Tie 27 of Premier Badminton League 4, held on Jan 10 ,saw the Chennai Smashers play against Bengaluru Raptors.

Bengaluru Raptors defeated Chennai Smashers by 3-2 at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore. This win helped Raptors to qualify for the semifinals and finished their league stage at the third spot in the table.

MATCH 1 – Men’s Doubles

The first match of the Tie was between Chris Adcock and O.C.Chung of Chennai Smashers and M. Ahsan and H.Setiawan of Bengaluru Raptors in the Men’s Doubles Category. In the first game, Raptors won the first point after some quick exchanges at the end nets and raced to a 3-1 lead with Ahsan’s smash at Chris body. However, Chennai leveled the scores at four points each with Ahsan’s unforced error. Chennai reduced the deficit to one point with Chris solid smash before Raptors took a 2-point lead at the break after Ahsan’s return was called in. After the break Raptors extended their lead to 12-8 after Chung’s return caught the net. However, Chennai leveled the scores at 12 points each with Chung’s backhand winner. Chennai took a 14-13 lead with a drop shot before Raptors leveled it with a review. Finally, Raptors won the first game by 15-14 on courtesy of a good rally from Ahsan and Hendra.

In the second game, Raptors leveled the scores at two points with Ahsan’s smash from the baseline. However, Chennai leveled the scores at five points each with Chung’s forehand winner before Chennai took a 7-5 lead with Chung’s smash from the net. Chennai took a 3-point lead at the break. After the break, Chennai extended their lead to 11-8 with Chris smash from the net. Chennai further extended their lead to 13-8 after Hendra’s smash caught the net. Finally, Chennai forced the game into the decider by 15-8 with Chris powerful smash.

In the third game both the sides made a strong start to the game as Raptors leveled the scores at three points each after Chris return went wide. Raptors took a 5-4 lead after Chung’s smash caught the net. However, Chennai took a 7-5 lead with Chung’s forehand winner before they took a 2-point lead at the break. After the break, Chennai extended their lead to 10-7 with Hendra’s unforced error near the net. Raptors reduced the deficit to one point after Chris shot went wide. Finally, Chennai won the match by 15-9 with Chris smash that gave Chennai a 1-0 lead in the Tie.

MATCH 2- Men’s Singles

The second match of the Tie was between P. Kashyap of Chennai Smashers and B.S.Praneeth of Bengaluru Raptors in the Men’s Singles Category. It was a trump match for Chennai Smashers. In the first game, Kashyap won the first point with a smash down the line. However, Praneeth took a 6-2 lead after Kashyap’s shot went wide in a 26-shot rally. Praneeth took a 5-point lead at the break with a superb smash. After the break, Kashyap reduced the deficit to one point with Praneeth’s unforced error. However, Praneeth extended his lead to 11-8 with a forehand winner before he further extended his lead to 14-8 with a smash. Finally, Praneeth won the first game by 15-11 with a lovely drop shot.

In the second game, Kashyap took the first point with a forehand smash. Praneeth took a 4-1 lead after Kashyap’s shot went wide. However, Kashyap leveled the scores at five points each after Praneeth’s unforced error at the net. Praneeth took a 2-point lead at the break with a drop shot. After the break, Kashyap took an 11-9, lead after Praneeth’s drop shot went wide. Praneeth took a 13-12 lead after Kashyap’s return went wide. Finally, Praneeth won against the trump in straight games by 15-12 after Kashyap’s drop shot went wide that gave Raptors a 1-0 lead in the tie.

MATCH 3- Men’s Singles

The third match of the Tie was between W.F.Chong of Chennai Smashers and S. Kidambi of Bengaluru Raptors in the Men’s Singles Category. It was a trump match for Bengaluru Raptors. In the first game, Srikanth won the first point with a smash down the line before he took a 3-0 lead with a forehand winner. However, Chong reduced the deficit to one point after Srikanth’s unforced error. Srikanth took a 7-3 lead with a forehand winner before he took a 4-point lead at the break. After the break, Chong reduced the deficit to two points with Kidambi’s series of unforced errors. However, Srikanth took a 12-9 lead with a lovely drop shot. Finally, Srikanth won the first game by 15-10 with a forehand winner.

In the second game, Srikanth won the first point before he took a 6-3 lead with a drop shot. However, Chong leveled the scores at seven points each with Srikanth’s unforced errors before Srikanth took a 1-point lead at the break. After the break, Chong took the lead for the first time in the match by 9-8. However, Srikanth took back the lead with a lovely backhand winner. Finally, Srikanth won the match in straight games by 15-10 that gave Raptors a 3-0 lead in the Tie.

MATCH 4- Women’s Singles

The fourth match of the Tie was between S.J.Hyun of Chennai Smashers and T.T.Vu of Bengaluru Raptors in the Women’s Singles Category. In the first game, Sung leveled the scores at two points with a series of smashes. Sung took a 5-4 lead after she got the better of Trang I a 26-shot rally before Trang leveled the scores at seven points each. However, Sung took a 1-point lead at the break. After the break, Sung took an 11-9 lead with a forehand winner before she extended her lead to 13-9 with a smash. Finally, Sung won the first game by 15-10 comfortably.

In the second game, Sung won the first point with a smash before she took a 3-2 lead. Trang leveled the scores at six points each before she took a 2-point lead at the break. After the break, Sung leveled the scores at 10 points each with a terrific comeback. Sung further leveled the scores at 12 points each with Trang’s unforced errors. Finally, Trang forced the game into the decider by 15-14 with a forehand winner.

In the third game, Sung leveled the scores at one point each with a cross-court winner. Trang took a 2-1 lead with a lovely drop shot. Sung took a 4-point lead at the break after Trang’s shot went wide. After the break Sung extended her lead to 11-8 after Trang’s shot went long. Sung further extended her lead to 14-10 after Trang’s shot caught the net. Finally, Sung won the match by 15-10 to keep her unbeaten run in this season intact and brought down the lead to two points in the Tie.

MATCH 5- Mixed Doubles

The fifth match of the Tie was between C. Adcock and G. Adcock of Chennai Smashers and M.Ellis and L.Smith of Bengaluru Raptors in the Mixed Doubles Category. In the first game, Raptors took the first point with Lauren’s forehand winner before they took a 2-1 lead with Marcus solid smash. Chennai took a 5-4 lead with Chris ferocious smash. Chennai took a 3-point lead at the break with Chris smash down the middle. After the break, Chennai extended their lead to 11-6 after Lauren’s shot caught the net. Chennai extended their lead further o 14-8 with Chris smash. Finally, Chennai won the first game by 15-8 with Chris smash down the line.

In the second game Chennai leveled, the scores at two points each after Lauren’s shot went long. Chennai took a 5-2 lead with some good play from the Adcock’s. However, Raptors leveled the scores at six points each before Chennai took a 1-point lead at the break with Gabby’s jump smash. After the break, Chennai extended their lead to 10-9 after they got the better of Raptors in a 29-shot rally. However, Raptors took a 13-10 lead with Marcus forehand winner. Finally, Raptors forced the game into the decider by 15-12 with Lauren’s smash.

In the third game, Chennai took a whopping 5-0 lead and raced to a 7- 1 lead on courtesy of Gabby’s lovely play near the net. Chennai took a hefty 6-point lead at the break. After the break, Chennai extended their lead to 12-4 with Chris body smash. Finally, Chennai won the match by 15-4 with Chris forehand winner that brought the scoreline 3-2 in favor of Raptors who cruised through the semifinals with this victory.
