Match 53 of Indian Super League 5, held on Dec 9 ,saw the Bengaluru FC play against Mumbai City FC.
Mumbai City FC held Bengaluru FC by 1-1 at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru despite having reduced to 10 men on the field for the most part of the game. This point helped Mumbai move to the second spot while Bengaluru remained at the summit. Bengaluru FC had 55% possession than Mumbai’s 45%.
An Entertaining Half
Mumbai City FC won the toss and chose their side. The home side got the first chance after Sunil played a through ball to Chencho in the box, but the latter’s shot went over the crossbar and went out for a goal kick. In the 23rd minute, the hosts took the lead after Chencho played a through ball to Rahul on the left. Rahul sent a beautiful cross, which found Udanta in the box, and the latter headed it into the right corner to give his side a 1-0 lead. After eight minutes, Mumbai scored an equalizer through the combination of Sougou and Arnold Issoko. Arnold sent a superb cross for Sougou inside the box and the latter headed the ball past the keeper into the back of the net. A couple of minutes later Bastos fired a shot from outside the box towards the target, but his shot went just wide of the far post. In the 35th minute, Issoko sent a diagonal cross from the right to Bastos at the far post and the latter headed the ball towards the goal, but Gurpreet made a brilliant save in the end by diving towards his left. In the added time, the hosts won a corner and Dimas played a beautiful ball to Chhetri in the box and the latter smashed the ball towards the goal, but the Mumbai custodian was alert enough to parry it away from danger. Both the sides entered the break deadlocked at 1-1 scoreline.
Mumbai held Bengaluru to share the points from the game
As the second half started, Bastos played Sougou through on goal with his header and the latter fired a shot towards the target, but the keeper made a terrific save in the end. A couple of minutes later Chhetri got to the end of Xisco’s pass outside the box and fired a shot towards the left which took a deflection of Goian and went towards the bottom left corner, but Amrinder made a superb save by diving to his right. In the 51st minute, Mumbai was reduced to 10 men after Sehnaj’s rash challenge on Dimas, which eventually got his second yellow card of the game. Despite being reduced to 10 men on the filed Mumbai played brilliantly and created chances to score by getting past the host’s defence. In the 74th minute, Rahul’s shot was blocked by Mumbai’s defender inside the box and the rebound ball fell into the path of Xisco in the box. Xisco then fired a shot towards the top left corner, but the keeper parried it away for a corner. The resulting corner was taken by Dimas and his shot found the head of Paartalu in the middle, but the latter’s header went over the bar. Mumbai tried to keep themselves in the game with a gritty defence and held Bengaluru FC in a sensational draw to share the points from the game.
