ISL-SEASON 4-SEMIFINAL-2-LEG-2-FC GOA VS CHENNAYIN FC
SEMIFINAL 2 -2nd Leg of Indian Super League 4, held on Mar 13 ,saw the FC Goa play against Chennayin FC.
Chennaiyin FC defeated FC Goa by 3-0 in the second leg of the 2nd semifinal at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. Jeje’s brace and Dhanpal’s goal ensured a place for Chennai in the final against Bengaluru on March 17.FC Goa had 60% possession than Chennai’s 40%.
Chennai went into the break with a 2 goal advantage.
Chennaiyin FC won the toss and chose their side. In the 5th minute, Jerry almost scored an own goal after Mandar passed a ball to Narayan Das and the latter drilled a low shot across the face of the goal, but Jerry cleared it away for the corner where the ball rolled inches wide of the post. In the 11th minute Boumous was through in the box from the left and squared the ball to Mandar who then fired a shot toward the goal, but Karanjit saved it superbly with his legs and Sereno cleared it out of danger.3 minutes later Lanzarote fired a thunderous shot towards the goal from a free-kick, but Karanjit made a fingertip save to deny a goal for the visitors. In the 22nd minute, the hosts had a big opportunity to score a goal from a free-kick after Nelson whipped in a cross which found Jeje who was unmarked rose high and headed it towards the goal, but his shot went over the crossbar.
In the 26th minute, the hosts scored a goal against the run of the play due to some defensive lapse by Goa defenders. Nelson played a superb ball in the middle which found Jeje who was once again unmarked and this time he didn’t do any mistake as he calmly beat the keeper to put the ball into the back of the net. After 3 minutes Chennai doubled their lead where Nelson played a superb ball from a free-kick towards the far post where Ganesh raised and headed it inside the goal to give his team a 2-0 lead. In the 32nd minute Augusto outfoxed Seriton on the left and fired a shot at the near post, but Naveen came up with a good save to deny a goal for the hosts. In the 41st minute Hugo moved inside the box and played a backheel to Mandar who faked his shot to get past Ganesh and fired a shot at the near post, but Karanjit came once again to the rescue of the hosts as he made a fingertip save. Finally, the hosts went into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Chennai stormed into the finals with a brilliant performance
As the second half started in the 47th minute Nelson’s shot from a free-kick was punched away by the keeper and the rebound ball fell into the path of Bikramjit on the right. He then curled it back inside the box and it was headed out by one of the Goa defenders, but Augusto gained the ball and blasted his shot over the post. In the 65th minute, the host could have sealed the deal after Jeje made a good run behind the Goa back line and saw the keeper coming off his line and fired a shot towards the target, but his shot went wide of the post. After 11 minutes Ahmed fire a shot towards the top right corner, but Karanjit positioned himself well to parry it over the crossbar.
In the 86th minute, Lanzarote tried to curl the ball inside the far left corner from a free-kick, but the keeper was alert as he moved to his right to palm it away from the danger. At the stroke of the end time, Chennai handed more miseries to the Goa camp as they scored their 3rd goal of the night. Gavilan did well to send the ball into the box where it found Jeje after a poor touch by Ali and Jeje slotted the ball into the back of the net with his left foot. Finally, Chennai won the game in a superb fashion to set up a south Indian derby against Bengaluru in the finals.
