TIE-18-MUMBAI ROCKETS VS AHMEDABAD SMASH MASTERS

TIE 18 of Premier Badminton League 3, held on Jan 9, saw the Mumbai Rockets play against Ahmedabad Smash Masters.

Ahmedabad Smash Masters was on a rampage against Mumbai Rockets by 5-0 and qualified for Semi-Finals. In a shocking turn of events, Mumbai was knocked out of PBL 3. This win also ensured Masters move to the top spot in the table. For the first time in this season, all matches ended in straight games and both teams calling trump on the same match.

Match-1-Mixed Doubles

The first match of the tie was between Mumbai’s L.Y.Dae/G. Stoeva and Ahmedabad’s L.C.Him/K.R.Juhl.
In the first set of the match, Masters picked the first point after Him’s smash. Mumbai picked the first point after Dae’s smash. Masters raced to a 6-2 lead after an excellent drop shot by Him. Masters headed into the break with a 5 point lead with Him’s big smash. After the break Maters raced to a 12-4 lead with Him’s fabulous smash. Mumbai then brought down the score to 10-13 after Juhl’s shot hit the net. Masters then got the set point after Stoeva’s shot went wide. Finally, Masters won the set by 15-11 after Stoeva’s shot went long.

In the second set of the game, Masters picked the first point after an error by Stoeva. Masters raced to an early lead of 4-0 after Dae’s forehand shot found the net. Mumbai opened their account in the set after a service error by Juhl. Masters increased their lead to 7-3 after a superb drop from Juhl. Masters once again went into the break with a 4 point lead after Him’s shot clipped inside the line. Masters raced to a 13-5 lead after an error by Stoeva. Finally, Masters won the set and match by 15-7 with Him’s smash.

Match-2-Men’s Singles

The second match of the tie was between Mumbai’s S.W.Ho and Ahmedabad’s H.S.Prannoy, where Ho is the World No 5 and Prannoy is the World No 10.

In the first set of the match, Ho opened the account with a smash across the court.Ho raced to a 3-0 lead after an error by Prannoy. Prannoy leveled the scores at 3 points each after Ho’s shot went long. Prannoy leveled the scores at 7 points each after Ho’s shot went long.Ho went into the break with a slender lead.Ho leveled the scores at 11 points each after Prannoy’s forehand shot went wide. Prannoy raced to a 14-12 lead with a cross-court shot. Finally, Prannoy won the set by 15-12 after an error by Ho.

In the second set of the game, Prannoy opened the account with a huge smash.Ho raced to a 3-1 lead after Prannoy’s shot hit the net.Ho leveled the scores at 5 points each after an error from Prannoy. Ho went into the break with a 2 point lead after an error by Prannoy. Ho raced to an 11-8 lead after Prannoy’s shot went wide. Prannoy leveled the scores at 11 points each with a superb smash down the line. Prannoy raced to a 14-12 lead with a big smash. Finally, Prannoy won the set and match by 15-12 after Ho’s shot hit the net. Masters lead Mumbai by 2-0 in this tie

Match-3-Women’s Singles

The third match of the tie was between Mumbai’s B.Zhang and Ahmedabad’s T.T.Ying, where Zhang is the World No 11 and Ying is the World No 1.

In the first set of the match, Ying raced to a 3-2 lead after Zhang’s shot went long. Ying increased her lead to 6-5 after a misjudgment from Zhang.Zhang brought down the score to 6-7 after Ying’s shot went wide. Ying headed into the break with a 2 point lead after Zhang’s shot hit the net. After the break, Zhang brought down the score to 7-9 with a good back hand shot. Ying raced to a 14-9 lead with a good drop. Finally, Ying won the set by 15-9 after Zhang’s shot went wide.

In the second set of the game, Zhang picked the first point with an excellent drop.Zhang raced to a 4-0 lead with a timely smash. Ying picked her first point with a low drop which was short for Zhang. Ying leveled the scores at 5 points each after Zhang’s shot found the net. Ying raced to a 7-6 lead after Zhang’s shot went long. Ying went into the break with a 1 point lead after Zhang’s miss judgment. Ying raced to an 11-6 lead after Zhang’s shot went long.Zhang brought down the deficit to 3 points with a cross-court shot. Finally, Ying won the set by 15-12 after Zhang’s smash hit the net. This gave Masters a lead of 3-0 in this tie.

Match-4-Men’s Singles

The fourth match of the tie was between Mumbai’s Sameer Verma and Ahmedabad’s Sourabh Verma, where Sameer is the World No 30 and Sourabh is the World No 49.It was a trump match for both Ahmedabad Smash Masters and Mumbai Rockets.

In the first set of the match, Sourabh picked the first point after Sameer’s shot went wide. Sameer raced to a 4-3 lead with a good backhand shot. Sameer increased his lead to 7-5 after Sourabh’s shot hit the net. Sameer went into the break with a 3 point lead with a power smash. After the break, Sameer raced to an 11-7 lead after Sourabh’s shot went wide. Sourabh got the better of Sameer in a 19 shot rally with a backhand shot and leveled the scores at 13 points each. Sameer got the better of Sourabh in a 50 shot rally with a good backhand shot and raced to a 14-13 lead. Finally, Sourabh won the set by 15-14 in style.

In the second set of the game, Sameer opened the account in the set with a big smash. Sameer raced to a 3-2 lead with a cross-court smash. Sourabh raced to a 6-4 lead after Sameer’s shot went long. Sourabh went into the break with a 4 point lead after Sameer’s return went long. Sourabh raced to a 12-6 after Sameer’s smash went wide. Sameer brought down the score to 10-13 with a good deceptive drop shot. Finally, Sourabh won the trump match by 15-11 with a forehand smash and pushed Mumbai to a negative score. This loss made Mumbai officially out of the tournament. Masters lead Mumbai by 5-(-1) in this tie

Match-5-Men’s Doubles

The final match of the tie was between Mumbai’s L.Y.Dae/B.H.Tan and Ahmedabad’s K. Nandagopal/L.C.H.Reginald.

In the first set of the match, Masters raced to a 2-0 lead with Reginald’s smash down the line. Mumbai brought down the score to 2-3 after Tan’s pass in the open court. Mumbai raced to a 6-4 lead after Kidambi’s shot went out. Masters leveled the scores at 7 points each after Dae’s return went wide. Masters went into the break with a 1 point lead. Mumbai brought down the score to 9-10 with Tan’s 383 Kmph smash down the line. Mumbai raced to a 13-10 lead after an unforced error by Masters Players. Finally, Mumbai won the first set of the tie by 15-10 after Kidambi’s shot went wide.

In the second set of the match, Mumbai picked the first point after Kidambi’s shot went too long.Masters picked their first point after Dae’s shot hit the net. Mumbai raced to a 5-2 lead after Reginald’s shot went long.Mumbai headed into the break with a huge lead of 5 points after Reginald’s found the net. Masters brought down the score to 8-9 with Kidambi’s backhand shot. Mumbai raced to a 13-10 lead with Dae’s classic deceptive drop. Finally, Mumbai won the set and match by 15-12 and end their campaign with a win.
