TIE-13-AWADHE WARRIORS VS MUMBAI ROCKETS

TIE 13 of Premier Badminton League 3, held on Jan 4, saw the Awadhe Warriors play against Mumbai Rockets.

Mumbai Rockets were on a rampage against the hosts as they defeated Awadhe Warriors by 4-1. This win also helped Mumbai to stay in the hunt for qualifying to the Semifinal.

Match-1-Mixed Doubles

The first match of the day was between Awadhe’s T.C.Man/C. Pedersen and Mumbai’s L.Y.Dae/G. Stoeva and it was a trump match for Awadhe Warriors.

In the first set of the match, Rockets picked the first point of the day and raced to a 2-0 lead in a 27-shot rally. Awadhe took their 2nd point of the set with Man’s smash down the line. Warriors went into the break with a huge lead of 6 points after Pedersen’s shot hit the net. Finally, Warriors broke the Mumbai’s streak of 5 points on a trot with Man’s smash. Mumbai then reduced the lead to 7-11 on courtesy of Man’s smash. The lead of Mumbai was reduced to 4 points after Stoeva’s shot hit the net. Finally, Mumbai won the first set in style by 15-10 after Pedersen’s shot went wide.

In the 2nd set of the match, Warriors took the first point of the set after Dae’s forehand shot went wide. Warriors raced to a 3-0 lead with Man’s powerful smash. Mumbai picked their first point of the set with Dae’s deceptive drop shot. Mumbai then picked 6 points on a trot after Stoeva’s shot was unreturned by warrior’s players. Warriors then got the better of Mumbai in a 48 shot rally and reduced the deficit to 1 points. Warriors went into the break with a slender lead of 1 with Man’s thunderous smash. Warriors then increased the lead to 3 points with Man’s smash down the middle. Rockets then leveled the scores at 10 points each after man’s shot went wide. Warriors then got better of Rockets in a 36 shot rally after Dae’s shot went long and raced to a 14-12 lead. But Mumbai leveled the scores at 14 points each with Stoeva’s cross-court smash. Finally, Warriors forced the game into the decider after Dae was not able to respond to Man’s smash.

In the decider, Mumbai picked the first point after Pedersen’s service error. Mumbai then raced to a 3-0 lead after Man’s shot went wide. Warriors picked their first point in the decider with Man’s 339 Kmph smash. Mumbai then increased the lead to 5-3 after a series of unforced errors by Warriors. Mumbai went into the break with a 5 point lead after Pedersen’s shot hit the net. Mumbai then increased the lead to 10-4 with Dae’s smash. Warriors were trailing Rockets by 5-10 after Man’s 340 Kmph smash. Mumbai got the better of Awadhe in a 30 shot rally after Dae’s pass went over Man.Finally Mumbai won the set by 15-7 after Pedersen’s service error. Mumbai won the game against the trump and pushed Warriors into the negative score in the tie.

Match-2-Men’s Singles

The second match of the day was between Awadhe’s H. Aggarwal and Mumbai’s S. Verma, where H. Aggarwal is the World No 223, while S. Verma is World No 30. Being the proverbial David against the Goliath, Aggarwal put up a stiff fight, not conceding points easily, but couldn’t stand up to Verma’s experience and prowess.

In the first set of the match, Verma picked the first point of the match with quick shots. Verma then raced to a whopping 5-0 lead after he placed his smash into the vacant side of the court. Aggarwal picked his first point after Verma’s shot hit the net. Verma then headed into the break with a huge lead of 6 points with a powerful smash. Aggarwal then brought down the score to 4-8 with a cross-court smash. Verma then raced to an 11-4 lead and he was making Aggarwal to move him back and forth and he was too strong for Aggarwal. Finally, Rockets won the set by 15-6 after Aggarwal’s shot hit the net.

In the 2nd set of the match, Verma raced to a 2-0 lead with a good smash down the line. Aggarwal then leveled the scores at 2 points each after an unforced error by Verma. Verma then increased his lead to 6-3 with a big smash. But Aggarwal brought down the lead to 6-7 after Verma’s error. Verma went into the break with a slender lead of 2 points. Verma then raced to a 12-8 lead after an unforced error by Aggarwal after the break. Aggarwal then leveled the scores at 12 points each after Verma’s shot hit the net. Aggarwal once again leveled the scores at 14 points each after Aggarwal’s drop was not returned by Verma. Finally, Verma won the set by 15-14 in a close encounter after Verma’s smash. Mumbai leads Awadhe by 2-(-1) in this tie.

Match-3-Women’s Singles

The third match of the day was between Awadhe’s S. Nehwal and Mumbai’s B.Zhang. It was a match to watch as Saina was up against an opponent that was just a world rank away from her! (S. Nehwal is the World No 10, while B.Zhang is World No 11.)

In the first set of the match, Zhang picked the first point with a superb drop shot. Saina picked up her first point of the game after Zhang’s shot went long.Zhang then increased the lead to 4-2 with a smash down the line. Saina brought down the lead to 4-7 with a cross-court drop. But in the end, Zhang went into the break with a 4 point lead after Saina’s shot hit the net. After the break, Zhang increased her lead to 12-7 after Saina’s smash went wide. Finally, Zhang won the set comfortably by 15-8 after Saina’s unforced error.

In the 2nd set of the match, Zhang took the first point with a drop shot and she raced to a 3-1 lead after Saina’s smash hit the net. Saina then leveled the scores at 5 points each after Zhang’s shot went wide.Zhang then leveled the scores at 7 points each with a powerful smash. Saina headed into the break with a slender lead of 1 point after Zhang’s shot went long. Saina then leveled the scores at 10 points each after Zhang’s drop went wide. Saina won 6 consecutive points on a trot and took the set by 15-10 and forced the game into the decider.

In the decider, Saina took the first point after Zhang’s drop hit the net and raced to a 3-0 lead after Zhang’s lob went wide. Zhang picked her first point of the set after Saina’s backhand return fell inside her court.Zhang then brought the lead to 4-6 after Saina’s shot went wide. Saina headed into the break with an 8-4 lead after Zhang’s shot hit the net.Zhang then brought down the deficit to 1 point with her drop shot. Saina then raced to a 14-10 lead after Zhang’s shot went wide. But Zhang brought down the lead to 13-14 after Saina’s lob went wide. Finally, Saina won the game by 15-13 in a thrilling match after losing the first set and helped her team to move from the negative score in the tie.

Match-4-Men’s Singles

The fourth match of the day was between Awadhe’s K. Srikanth and Mumbai’s S.W.Ho. PBL is witnessing battle among top talent. For this match, the Warriors roped in World No 3, K. Srikanth to clash with Rocket’s S.W.Ho, who is World No 5.

In the first set of the match, Ho took the first point after Srikanth’s smash hit the net. Srikanth leveled the scores at 2 points each with a cross-court smash.Ho then leveled the scores at 4 points each after Srikanth’s shot hit the net.Ho then headed into the break with a 2 point lead after Srikanth’s shot hit the net once again. Srikanth brought the lead to 9-10 with a smash to the backhand of Ho. Srikanth took the lead for the first time after the break to 14-13.Finally, Srikanth won the set by 15-13 on courtesy of some great badminton by him.

In the 2nd set of the match, Ho won the first point after Srikanth’s shot went long and Srikanth won his first point after Ho’s lob went long.Ho then leveled the scores at 4 points each after Srikanth’s drop shot touched the net.Ho headed into the break with a 4 point lead after an unforced error by Srikanth. Ho was running away with the game as he raced to a 12-7 lead after Srikanth’s shot hit the net. Srikanth reduced the deficit to 1 point with a drop shot. Finally, Ho won the set by 15-13 and forced the game into the decider after Srikanth’s error near the net.

In the decider, Ho picked the first point of the decider after Srikanth’s cross-court smash went wide. Srikanth picked his first point after Ho’s backhand return hit the net. Srikanth then raced to a 6-2 with a superb drop shot. Srikanth headed into the break with a 4 point lead after his smash down the line. Srikanth then started to run away with the game as he raced to a whopping 11-4 lead with a forehand smash. Finally, Srikanth won the match in style by 15-4 with an overhead smash. This made his team to trail Awadhe by 1 point in the tie.

Match-5-Men’s Doubles

The final match of the day was between Awadhe’s H.Setiawan/O.C.Chung and Mumbai’s L.Y.Dae/B.H.Tan and it was a trump match for Mumbai Rockets.
In the first set of the match, Awadhe picked the first point of the match. Awadhe raced to a 5-2 lead after their shot fell inside the court. Awadhe then leveled the scores at 6 points each with Tan’s smash down the line. Mumbai went into the break with a 2 point lead. Warriors then brought down Mumbai’s lead to 8-12 with Chung’s smash. Warriors reduced the deficit to 1 point after Tan’s smash found the net. Finally, Mumbai took the set by 15-13 with Dae’s smash down the line.

In the 2nd set of the match, Awadhe picked the first point. Awadhe raced to a 3-1 lead after some good play by Man and Chung.Mumbai then raced to a 6-3 lead after Chung’s return went wide. Mumbai headed into the break with a 3 point lead. Mumbai increased their lead to 4 points with Dae’s powerful smash. Awadhe then brought down the score to 10-12 after Dae’s shot went wide. Finally, Mumbai won the match by 15-12 after an overhead smash by Dae. This win helped them to win the Tie by 4-1.
