AWADHE WARRIORS VS AHMEDABAD SMASH MASTERS

TIE 11 of Premier Badminton League 3, held on Jan 2 ,saw the Awadhe Warriors play against Ahmedabad Smash Masters.

Awadhe Warriors defeated Ahmedabad Smash Masters by 4-3 in a thrilling encounter as the winner was decided in the last match of the tie and Warriors moved to the top of the table. This was Smash Masters first defeat of this season.

Match-1- Mixed Doubles

The first match of the day was between Awadhe’s T.C.Man/C. Pedersen and Ahmedabad’s L.C.Him/K.R.Juhl.

In the first set of the match, Awadhe picked the first point of the match after Tan’s smash. Awadhe took the lead to 4-3 after Tang landed a deceptive drop shot. Tang then took a shot from behind the back to take the lead to 5-4 after Law’s unforced error. Awadhe went into the break with a 3 point lead. Smash Masters then leveled the scores at 9 points each after Tang’s shot went long. Then the lead kept on fluctuating on either side and Awadhe leveled the scores at 14 points each after Law’s shot went out. Finally, Smash Masters took the set by 15-14 after Tang’s shot hit the net.

In the 2nd set of the match, Awadhe raced to a 3-0 lead with Tang’s superb drop shot. Smash Masters leveled the scores at 3 points each after Juhl’s drop shot at the net. Awadhe once again headed into the break with a 3 point lead after Juhl’s shot hit the net. Awadhe then increased their lead to 4 points after Tang’s 343 Kmph smash from the baseline. Masters got the better of Awadhe in a 27 shot rally after Tang’s shot hit the net. Awadhe then raced to a 4 point lead with Tang’s smash in the middle. Awadhe took the set by 15-12 and forced the game into the decider after Law’s shot hit the net.

In the decider, Smash Master took the first point after Tang’s shot hit the net. Awadhe then leveled the scores at 2 points each with Pedersen’s backhand shot. Masters then took the lead to 5-4 after Tang’s shot went wide. But Masters went into the break with a 2 point lead after Tang missed a shot to Juhl’s return. After the break Masters raced to a 12-8 lead with a powerful smash from Pedersen’s loose shot. Awadhe then leveled the scores at 13 points each with Tang’s forehand shot. Awadhe then took the lead after an unforced error by Juhl at the net.

Finally, Awadhe won the set as well as the game by 15-14 on courtesy of Tang’s angled cross-court drop. It was a brilliant comeback by Awadhe’s players after being a game down.

Match-2-Men’s Singles

The second match of the day was between Awadhe’s P. Kashyap and Ahmedabad’s S. Verma and it was a trump match for Awadhe Warriors.

In the first set of the match, Verma raced to a 2-0 lead after an unforced error by Kashyap. Kashyap picked the first point of the game after Verma’s shot went wide. Kashyap then leveled the scores at 5 points each with his powerful smash. Sourabh headed into the break with a 3 point lead. Kashyap then leveled the scores at 8 points each after Verma’s shot went wide. Verma then took the lead to 11-10 after his shot was called it. Finally, Sourabh took the set by 15-11 after Kashyap’s shot hit the net.

In the 2nd set Sourabh started the game with a powerful smash, but Kashyap leveled the scores at 2 points each after an unforced error by Verma. Sourabh then increased the lead to 2 points with a good drop shot, but once again Kashyap leveled the scores at 6 points each after Verma’s shot went out. Kashyap went into the break with a slender lead of 1 point. Kashyap then raced to an 11-8 lead with a 330 Kmph smash after the break. Verma equalized the scores at 11 points each with Kashyap hitting the net. Kashyap then took the set to match point with a good defensive play which forced Verma to make an unforced error. Finally, Kashyap forced the game into the decider after Sourabh’s shot hit the net.

In the decider, Verma scored the first point after Kashyap’s shot went long.In fiery smash from Verma equalized the scores at 2 points each. Verma then went into the break with a huge lead of 5 points after his good work near the net. Kashyap after the break leveled the scores at 9 points each with a 303 Kmph smash. Verma then got the better of Kashyap in a 37 shot rally after Kashyap’s shot went long. Verma then raced to a 14-10 lead after Kashyap missed Verma’s cross-court drop. Kashyap then got better of Verma in a 39 shot rally after Verma’s shot hit the net. Finally, Kashyap won his trump match by 15-14 after Verma’s unforced error and it was an amazing comeback by him into the game as he picked 5 consecutive points on a trot to win this crucial match for his team. Awadhe leads Masters by 3-0 in this tie.

Match-3- Men’s Singles

The third match of the day was between Awadhe’s K. Srikanth and Ahmedabad’s H.S.Prannoy.

In the first set of the match, Prannoy was to a flying start as he led Srikanth by 3-1 on courtesy of some well-placed shots. Prannoy then headed into the break with a huge lead of 6 points after an unforced error by Srikanth. Srikanth then picked up his pace after the break and was trailing Prannoy by 7-10. Prannoy then raced to a 13-8 lead after Srikanth’s shot missed the line by a whisker. Finally, Prannoy won the set comfortably by 15-8.

In the 2nd set of the game, Srikanth raced to a 3-0 lead with a body smash. Prannoy picked up his first point of the game with a cross-court smash. Prannoy then leveled the scores at 5 points each after an unforced error by Srikanth. Prannoy went into the break with a 3 point lead after Srikanth’s shot hit the net. Prannoy then increased his lead to a 13-7 lead with a good drop shot. Srikanth then took 4 consecutive points on a trot to stay in the game. But Prannoy won the match by 15-11 after Srikanth’s shot went long. Smash Masters registered their first victory of the tie and Prannoy maintains his unbeaten streak of 10 matches in PBL.

Match-4- Women’s Singles

The fourth match of the day was between Awadhe’s S. Nehwal and Ahmedabad’s T.T.Ying and it was a trump match for Ahmedabad Smash Masters.

In the first set of the match, Ying picked her first point of the match with her deceptive drop shot. Nehwal picked her first point of the game after Ying’s shot hit the net. Saina was losing a lot of points at the front of the court. Saina with a powerful smash reduced the deficit to 3 points. Ying won the set in a dominating fashion by 15-5 after Saina’s shot went wide.

In the 2nd set of the game, Saina raced to a 3-0 lead with a superb drop shot. Ying leveled the scores at 3 points each after a series of unforced errors by Saina. Then the lead kept on fluctuating on either side. But Ying went into the break with a 2 point lead after Saina’s Misjudgment. Saina then leveled the scores at 9 points each on courtesy of some good defensive play by her. Saina then took the lead to 13-11 with a superb drop shot in a 28 shot rally. Saina then leveled the scores at 14 points each after Ying’s service error. Ying finally won the trump match for her team by 15-14 with a superb drop shot near the net. Smash Masters were now in level with Awadhe by 3 points in the tie.

Match-5-Men’s Doubles

The final match of the day was between Awadhe’s T.C.Man/H.Setiawan and Ahmedabad’s L.C.H.Reginald/K. Nandagopal.

In the first set of the match, Masters leveled the scores at 1 point each after Setiawan’s shot hit the net. Warriors raced to a 6-4 lead after Nandagopal’s backhand shot went wide. Warriors went into the break with a 3 point lead. Masters then leveled the scores at 11 points each after Reginald made a superb pass down the line. Awadhe then raced to a 2 point lead after Nandagopal’s shot went out, but Masters leveled the scores at 14 points each after Tang’s shot hit the net. Finally, Warriors won the set by 15-14 after Nandagopal’s silly error.

In the 2nd set Masters raced to a 4-0 lead after Setiawan let a shot go out, but unfortunately the shot was well inside. Warriors then leveled the scores at 4 points each after Reginald’s shot hit the net. Masters headed into the break with a 2 point lead. Warriors then leveled the scores at 8 points each after Reginald’s shot hit the net. Smash Masters got the better of Warriors in a 26 shot rally on courtesy of Reginald’s cross-court smash. Finally, Warriors won the match, as well as the tie by 15-10 after Setiawan’s shot, was called in.
