Awadhe Warriors secure a berth in the PBL semi finals

After an epic clash with the Bengaluru Blasters, Awadhe Warriors marched into the semi-finals of the PBL 2017, courtesy strong performances by Saina Nehwal and Srikanth Kidambi.

Pitted against the home team, Awadhe Warriors won a trump matche and scored a win of 4 -3 over the Bengaluru Blasters.

Mixed Doubles

Warrior’s Savitree Amitrapai and Bodin Isara gave the Blasters’ Sikki Reddy and Sung Hyun Ko a run for their money with powerful smashes and remarkable rallies.

Men’s Singles

Bengaluru’s Viktor Axelsen was trumped by Srikanth Kidambi. Kidambi, who was the 2014 China Open champion, delivered powerful smashes and shots that were pure class. His outstanding performance not only won over the audience, but also won him the match. Axelsen gave a tough fight, but squandered points in out of court shots and net errors. Score: 11-9, 11-9

The other Men’s Singles contested between Vincent Wong Wing Ki and Sourabh Verma was the opening match of the day. Bengaluru’s Sourabh Verma was in great form and that showed in his outstanding performance on the court. Wong had the upper hand in the beginning of Set 1, securing a lead of 6-2. But Verma took the game right out of the Warrior’s hand and secured Set 1 as well as Set 2 to post a win. Score: 11-13, 7-11

Women’s singles

The trump match of the day was between India’s ace shuttler and Awadhe Warrior Saina Nehwal and Bengaluru’s Cheung Ngan Yi.

Saina was in her element throughout the game, making a few glaring errors and then recovering spectacularly. The rallies between Cheung and Saina were a delight to watch, especially the winning shot of Saina. Saina has made a great comeback after her injury that had dampened her 2016 performances. In the post-match interview she stated that she was still recovering and would be in her best form in another 2-3 weeks. Score: 9-11, 11-5, 11-5

Men’s Doubles

The last game of the night was the Men’s Doubles between Warriors Goh W Shem, Markis Kido and Blasters Ko Sung-Hyun and Yoo Yeon Seong.

The Warriors had the upper hand initially, winning Set 1. But the Blasters pulled off a win, winning Set 2 and Set 3, and scoring the bonus trump point. Score: 11-6, 9-11, 6-11

With this Bengaluru Blasters’ PBL semi-final hopes are dashed as Awadhe Warriors qualifies for it.
