4 Indian Sports Movies to watch this year
Do you like movies where the underdog sportsperson beats all the odds and emerges the victor? Do you like movies with some goods punches (plot-wise and fist-wise) packed?
2016 saw various movies based on sports personalities, such as, Pelé: Birth of a Legend, and our home-grown Azhar. We also had fictitious sports-stars such as Sultan. And the good news is, there are many more to come this year!
Here’s a list of all the sports flicks ready to invade the cinema halls (and your hearts) in 2016.
- Freaky Ali
This one released last Friday. Boasting of an erstwhile unlikely cast of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Amy Jackson and Jas Arora, this movie is a combination of slapstick comedy and the righteous victory of the underdog. Siddiqui’s meteoric rise, from an undergarments seller to a golf star is hilariously captured in this flick. While the reviews are not very convincing, watch it for Siddiqui’s flawless performance and for the the poor man’s annexation of golf. Read review here.

- M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story
M.S. Dhoni is a much-sung hero in India. Since 2010, Dhoni has been the subject of management lessons (For management gyan from Captain Cool, read these: 11 lessons from Dhoni’s style, Dhoni’s story echoes in B Schools). His style, his cool-headedness in the face of adversity have been praised for long.
In his 2016 biopic, it’s Neeraj Pandey’s take on Dhoni’s personal struggle to emerge as the Indian Team captain that has taken the celluloid form. Sushant Singh Rajput has been casted as Dhoni, while Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli’s characters will be portrayed by Herry Tangri and Fawad Khan, respectively. Pandey’s previous flicks such as Baby and Special 26 have won accolades, so a lot of expectations are riding in there.

The film is said to be capturing his personal and professional life, with a few not-so-publicly-known details.

Yet another wrestling movie, by yet another Khan?
Or is that so?
Amir Khan plays the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a real-life wrestler from Haryana who trained his daughters, Geeta and Babita to win Commonwealth Games and World Wrestling Championship medals. (The Phogat sisters had participated in the Rio Olympics, although they were unable to secure medals) The movie will focus on the prejudices existing in today’s society against women entering traditionally male-oriented sports such as Wrestling, and how the Phogats slay the naysayers with their determination, grit and epic performances. The poster carries an interesting pro-girl slogan ‘Mhari Chorian Choron se kam hain ke?’ (‘Are our girls any lesser than our boys?’).
Do watch it for Khan’s perfect-than-perfect acting and the ‘betiyaan bachao, betiyaan badao’ stance, and of course, some action-packed wrestling.
