Indian Golfer Anirban Lahiri retains 50th position in World Rankings
Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri jumped up to 50th place in official World Golf Rankings on Monday. He secured fifth place at last week’s European Masters held in Switzerland with 7.68 ranking points. This resulted in the Bangalore golfer to attain the 50th position after a gap of a month. He also has regained his Top-10 place in the Race to Dubai list of European Tour. This will put him in line for a bonus for being in Top-15 of the European Merit list. He holds top position in current Asian Tour Order of Merit.
Lahiri picked up US$ 123,956 after the Switzerland show which took his season’s tally to US$ 925,484 on Asian tour. He is the third player in Asian Tour history to cross the $1 million earnings in a single season, the first two being India’s Jeev Milkha Singh and Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand.
If Lahiri stays on top of Merit list till the end of this season, he will become the fourth Indian to become Asia’s number one, the first three Indians being Jyoti Randhawa, Arjun Atwal and Jeev Milkha Singh.
Lahiri is likely to qualify for the International team for the President’s cup and would become the first Indian to play the President’s cup in Korea in October.
Another Indian, SSP Chawrasia is placed third on the Asian Tour Money List with US$ 267,244.
The Arjuna Awardee is heading to the US to compete in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational beginning August 6.
“I will be more comfortable playing in the US now. When you go somewhere for the first time you take time to understand the conditions. This will be my third trip and I have become more familiar with the grass and the sloppy greens there. My confidence is back with the way I played here and that’s going to keep me in good stead in the PGA championship”, Lahiri said.
